What is MobiClique?
MobiClique is a mobile social networking software for mobile devices that allows people to manage their social network on their mobile device and to exchange messages with friends and communities of users sharing similar interests. MobiClique takes advantage of physical proximity to enrich the users social networks. It also exploits the device proximity and social relationships to disseminate content (i.e. messages) in a mobile ad hoc network in a store-carry-forward fashion without relying on any infrastructure.
Applications
The core networking middleware of MobiClique builds on the Haggle
prototype. In addition, we include the following applications:
The
mobile social networking application allows the user to
interact with MobiClique’s underlying social graph. The application
displays to the user the set of neighboring devices with their social
profile and provides an interface to manage the user’s ad hoc social
network (i.e. add or remove friends and change interests). The user is
informed of the presence of a friend or a potential new friend by a
sound or a vibration.
The asynchronous messaging application allows friends to send
messages to each other over the social network substrate. This
application is modeled around a conventional instant messaging
application and enables threaded discussions and file sending.
The epidemic newsgroup application allows asynchronous
discussions among multiple people sharing a specific topic of interest.
This application is similar to the traditional “Usenet” messaging
service. The messaging interface is the same as in the asynchronous
messaging application, with the exception that message threads are
displayed within the context of a particular interest group, rather
than a particular friend.
The
ad hoc voting application lets you vote for your favorite
talk, meal, or social event at SIGCOMM 2009. The voting results are
collected opportunistically as people meet other people with new votes.
SIGCOMM 2009 Experiment
We are performing together with the Haggle project a
mobile social networking experiment with MobiClique during the SIGCOMM 2009
conference in Barcelona (17th - 21th August, 2009). The goal of
the
experiment is to collect data on real application usage, Bluetooth
contact opportunities and opportunistic communications. The trace will
be anonymized and made available later on CRAWDAD.
For the experiment, we distribute to around 100 volunteers a smartphone
that runs MobiClique. Each user is asked to carry the device during the
conference and use the MobiClique application to interact with each
others. The initial social profile will be bootstrapped using
participants' real Facebook accounts (visible information can be
chosen at initialization time).
We will award 10 LG and 3 HTC smartphones to the most active
participants in the end of the conference.
How to Participate to the Experiment?
Join the MobiClique
SIGCOMM 2009 group on Facebook.
When you arrive to SIGCOMM, come to see us on our desk close to the
registration area to get your device.
To bootstrap your device, we will ask you to connect to your Facebook
account once. We will fetch your id, basic profile information, the
list of your groups and networks, and the list of friends.
The profile information is uploaded to your device. You can edit the
profile before it is uploaded on the device to exclude any details you
do not want to be visible in the experiment.
After the profile setup you are ready to go and start meeting new
people, create new groups, send messages and give your opinion on
various talks using the MobiClique applications.
In case of problems or if you have any questions, we will present on our
desk during the conference at least during the breaks. You can also
post your questions and feedback to the Facebook group.
Bring back your device before you leave the conference
on Friday 21/9/2009 at latest!
